STARS Travel Award
STARS (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe) is a community project led by Transport for London (TFL) that inspires young Londoners to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely by championing walking, scooting and cycling. STARS supports pupils' well-being by encouraging these healthier travel behaviours and habits as well as helping to reduce congestion at the school gates and improve road safety and air quality.
To make active travel possible for everyone at Beaconsfield Primary School, our pupils undertake different initiatives, events, activities across the year encouraging active travel. Examples of initiatives, events, activities include Road Safety Week, Bikeability training, Emerging riders, The Big Pedal and more.
Pupil voice is important to us (UNCRC Article 12) so we have appointed ‘Junior Travel Ambassadors’ from a range of year groups to be the school school champions who are responsible for keeping the school up-to-date of any important information for the whole school to participate encouraging active school travel.
The JTA group currently meet once a half-term with the STARS/JTA leader to discuss key issues relating to travel and plan for future initiatives, events and activities. They then share information with their classes. The STARS/JTA notice-board also ensures that both pupils and staff are kept up to date with key information.
